If you can’t
tell, I go and do a lot of things for and with my parents. I love going any
place they will take me! I had known for a while they were planning on taking a
trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in NM. They were going to be adjunct staff, which
means they would only pay have tuition and anyone they took with them, would be
50% off too! They decided to take 4 grandsons with them. As time came closer
and I didn’t have a job, they asked if I wanted to go with them and help them
with the boys! I have never been known to say no to a trip! Derrick’s exact
words were “you suck”, He loves to go anywhere and everywhere he can! It wasn’t
even an option to bring him because there was not enough room and his work
wouldn’t allow him to be gone that long! My dad picked a route that had the
least amount of mountains with a lower grade %. We were taking a good van but
older and with 7 people in tow plus a car topper plus a small trailer with more
stuff…. We were trying to play in safe! We left on a Saturday morning and our
plan was to arrive in New Mexico Sunday night. We stayed the first night out
side of Grand Junction as planned. The boys and I played in the hotel pool and
I was surprised I did not see ice floating with us!
We
got up and got on the road early Sunday morning and headed towards Montrose. As
we headed up the summit, we soon realized that the van was overheating and
minor things were not working. We pulled over and open the hood. Our timing
belt was not on the pulley system; there is no way for us to fix it. We call
AAA and my dad’s aunt that lives in Grand Junction. AAA towed us to Grand
Juction where my dad’s cousin looked at the car. My parents decided to rent a
mini van for the week because we did not have the time to wait for the van to
get fixed. We left the van in the hands of my dads cousin. At the latest we
needed to be in Philmont by Monday morning for my parents to teach their
classes.
WHAT A
LONG DAY! We arrived at Philmont (close to Cimmeron, NM) at 2 am Monday morning.
This is where I found out would be sleeping in TENTS for the week. I knew we
packed sleeping bags but no one mention TENT to me. They were nice with
electricity and what not but STILL!! The one thing that made it all worth it,
CELL PHONE SERVICE! I also am not sure what I was thinking but I did not pack
“scout camp attire”. Maybe I should have asked for clarification!
